Side Project: Restoring Goodmans Magnum K2 Speakers

This post isn’t directly related to guitars, but is music related. For 30 years I’ve owned a pair of Goodmans Magnum K2 speakers from 1973, and they’ve inevitably started showing their age. I recently decided to get and install new capacitors for them (known as recapping) and also to replace the midrange drivers and tweeters, most of which had worn out.

These can be hard to find, if you want original ones, and can take a certain amount of online vigilance. Thankfully, mine paid off. The next task was deciding which capacitors to get in order to retain, as far as possible, the original character of the speakers. I sought advice online and opted for Jantzen Audio for the two 4.7uF caps in each speaker and Mundorf for the single 10uF ones. It’s interesting to see how much capacitors have shrunk in the intervening years, with these being the original ones.

All that was needed was to replicate the connections with the new capacitors, which wasn’t too difficult, certainly no more complicated than some guitar wiring.

Then all that was needed was to put the drivers back in. Everything worked fine, and it’s good to have these venerable speakers working at their best again.
